White Gold

Porcelain from China: 1400 to 1900

8 May to 13 September 2015

Porcelain was highly appreciated not only in the Middle Kingdom; the "white gold" from China was also much in demand in Europe and the Middle East. In combination with the permanent loans from the Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, the museum is presenting for the first time a selection of the 100 or so most refined, and most unusual, items of porcelain in its collection.

Works in the exhibition

Alongside outstanding blue-and-white porcelain dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, the exhibition also includes a number of pieces decorated with overglaze enamels, as well as porcelain with elegant monochrome glazes, pure white Blanc de Chine and various types of glazed stoneware. Among the particular highlights are the architectural ceramics, glazed in luminous colours, from palaces and temples, also dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth centuries, which include large-format figural representations. They were acquired in China by the museum’s founders in the early twentieth century. The final part of the exhibition is devoted to Chinese porcelain made for export.

A richly illustrated catalogue in German and English will be published to accompany the exhibition.
